Tropical take on Memphis

Memphis goes tropical? Interesting to note a similar pastels colour scheme on the stairwell of this building, at the heart of what is increasingly becoming Maputo’s “golden mile”- Av. Julius Nyerere. The building is residential and called Rosas de Moçambique.

Good bones: Maputo façades

Relevant ugliness.
Small apartment block, possibly from late 1960’s.
This is a modest facade (made ugly by time and lack of maintenance), yet not naked: balconies and recesses are indispensable in this city. It’s about enjoying the good weather – a way of life.
And importantly, protecting openings

Drawing, thinking geometry

Thinking through a problem, with sketches. Extension to an existing house, which presents disparate geometries and tiled roofs. How to reconcile old and new?

Curves are difficult, and I am currently exploring perfect solids (to be voided) and a window protection detail with projecting arch.

Object family 2016, as designed and executed.

I like to conceptualize objects in families.

This family is about angularity, and a gradual deviation from 90 degrees square.
