Auto-Retrato no Tempo da Crise (self-portrait)

November 2008 – I began experimenting with collage back in 2002, whilst still a student of architecture at UCT. This self-portrait was the first attempt at using a combination of graphic cut-outs on paper, magazine images, a play of scale and relief/shadow. None of the images of people correspond to myself, family or friends, and were chosen for their emotive power. The portrait is 310 x 310mm, and is encased in a perspex box as if a laboratory lamella. The portrait was exhibited at the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIA)’s Architects as Artists exhibition (Cape Town: 2009).

About Maria GC Aragão

Architect, part-time lecturer, external examiner. I am interested in spaces of collective memory, the visual arts and architecture’s potential to enable change. I practice at the intersection between meaning, aesthetics and commerce. As an external examiner I look to architecture as an act of translation
