Shamis-Sá Mobile for Baby

August 2010 – This felt mobile for dear friends Vanessa and Khalid was based on a study of origami bird shapes. I initially wanted to make the birds out of felt squares, but the material wouldn’t hold the shape as well as origami paper, and so the birds became double-sided profiles stitched in different colours and contrasts to stimulate the baby’s mind. A set of clouds hovers above the birds, providing a backdrop to the baby’s vision. The entire set is washable – it can be simply lowered down into soapy water and then hung to dry. [Photos by Vanessa Ulia Dantas e Sá].

About Maria GC Aragão

Architect, part-time lecturer, external examiner. I am interested in spaces of collective memory, the visual arts and architecture’s potential to enable change. I practice at the intersection between meaning, aesthetics and commerce. As an external examiner I look to architecture as an act of translation
