House Daniels (at Jakupa, in 2009)

House Daniels – Alterations and Additions, 11 Norwood Ave, Athlone, Cape Town | Project involvement: 2009: Project Architect: Stage 1 & 2 (brief appraisal to concept design). An alterations and additions project for a residence. It is the owner’s childhood home, who has grown completely blind due to macular illness, but has retained his ability to navigate  the house and wishes to add temporary rental accommodation for visually impaired users that visit Cape Town for conferences, seminars and courses.
This project continued to explore ways in which to communicate architectural design to visually impaired users, such as simplified volumetric models, initiated with the new craft workshops building at the Cape Town Society for the Blind (Jakupa, 2007-2009). [Image source: Jakupa].

About Maria GC Aragão

Architect, part-time lecturer, external examiner. I am interested in spaces of collective memory, the visual arts and architecture’s potential to enable change. I practice at the intersection between meaning, aesthetics and commerce. As an external examiner I look to architecture as an act of translation
